Dance It Out// Kenzie & Katerina

When I asked Kenzie and Katerina to model for me I genuinely had very little interest in shooting dance pictures.  While it's true that I chose them both because they were dancers, I was planning on using the ease with which they moved to evoke emotion in a very different capacity.  Ironically, these are the images that turned out best and that stretched me the most.  I love them and I hope you will too!

The Dancer

There is so much power and control in the body of a dancer.  They spend hours in the studio teaching their bodies, down to their toes and fingertips, how to land just right.  Dance is more than just being able to move.  It is a matter of precision and yet, also ease.  It is strength and weakness.  It is control and freedom. Dance is a living contradiction.

Dancers are storytellers and emotion holders.   They are athletes and actors rolled into one. They have the ability to bring you to tears or leave you laughing.  To entertain and to challenge.  And in the midst of that overarching story, every dancer inserts their own.

Dancers have fun.  They experiment and laugh and radiate joy because they love what they do.  They love the story and the hard work and the community.  They create to enhance the beauty or the pain they see in the world.  To both question and answer.  But at the root, the best dancers dance because of the joy they feel when they do.

I have been surrounded by dancers for most of my life and they have taught me so much about confidence and living.  I hope my dance kids will one day say the same of me.

"To be creative means to be in love with life.  You can be creative only if you love life enough that you want to enhance its beauty, you want to bring a little more music to it, a little more poetry to it, a little more dance to it."
